Iyengar Yoga is the most widely practiced form of Hatha Yoga in the world. Iyengar Yoga is based on the classic teachings of the yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar (Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar, b. December 14, 1918 – d. August 20, 2014) from Pune, India. He was named as the world’s most influential Yoga Teacher by Time Magazine in its list of the world’s most influential people.

Deeply grounded in the ancient principles of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Iyengar Yoga addresses this spiritual journey from a perspective which is practical, experiential and intensely personal, from the peripheral body to the core of inner consciousness through the practice of asana (yoga posture) and pranayama (yogic breathing).

Iyengar Yoga Certified Teachers are trademarked in the United States and are governed by national and regional guidelines after a rigorous process of certification. We help students to learn yoga asanas (postures) with a focus on proper alignment and safety. In an Iyengar Yoga class, teachers provide thorough instructions with personal attention. Iyengar Yoga is the “meditation in action.” Yoga is not a workout but a spiritual path toward awareness and wholistic well-being.

Moreover, Iyengar Yoga integrates a well-devised system of props to assist, correct and realign different bodies with their unique limitations or needs. Finally, Iyengar Yoga teachers are trained in the art of “sequencing.” The class is structured to optimize learning and practicing in a sequence of yoga poses that warm up, develop endurance and stamina, and then cool down. Unlike in other styles of yoga, Iyengar Yoga helps students build a solid foundation by introducing standing poses in level 1 classes and slowly including other categories of poses as students progress.
